About the artist

Biography

I am a visual artist based in Edmonton, Alberta. My work draws on the natural world and its landscapes, and my training in design, digital media and writing still shapes how I look at a scene.

For more than a decade, visits to Japan every few years to see family have given me a lasting interest in its arts, culture and landscapes.

Watercolour is my main medium, joined by acrylic, mixed media and, occasionally, gold leaf. I choose professional-grade paints from makers around the world.

The University of Alberta and MacEwan University are my alma maters, and later my workplaces, where I put my training in design and digital media to professional use. I also wrote for the Alberta Ministry of Health.

In Edmonton, I have taken part in the Whyte Avenue Art Walk, one year as a volunteer and another as an artist. My work has also been shown at The Paint Spot’s Naess Gallery in Old Strathcona.

Artist Statement

Working in watercolour, acrylic and mixed media, I make semi-realistic and abstract work.

Increasingly, I am drawn to the quiet relationship between the natural world and the traces we leave within it: presence, memory, movement and time. I paint for contemplation, and I hope my compositions give viewers a place to slow down and let their attention move from one element to the next. Each stroke is, for me, a small celebration of life.

My practice rests on time-tested techniques and a consistent method. Wet-on-wet watercolour creates misty effects, like memory and the concerns of the present softening as they recede toward the horizon. Layering reflects how our thoughts evolve through our relationships with the world around us. Solid outlines and dark tones mark the barriers we face day to day.

With a background in design, I also collaborate with clients, translating their descriptions or personal photographs into custom scenes built from cherished memories.
